What school is she attending?

She is at SMU in downtown Dallas.
Her interest in engineering goes back a few years. In elementary school we couldn't find anything that would challenge her. Everything came too easily. So, we got her interested in amateur radio, getting her license when she was 10 and she has enjoyed learning how things work ever since.

Now, she is trying to decide whether she should go to work or go to grad school. More than one person has told her she would make a good professor. (While I was typing this she called and told us about a job fair they had at school. Southwest Airlines was there and the interviewer said she didn't know what the job was but they would tell her AFTER she was hired. Her mom and I told her not to walk away, but RUN!!!)

As for your son, clearly there are a lot of jobs in computer science. I don't know how many there for a pure math degree other than actuary (which is an excellent field). The other fields you mentioned are completely outside my knowledge base. All the best to him. May he find the best field for his considerable talents.

micro, thanks for your kind words, too.

Re: “She actually has a double major - electrical engineering and math. ”

Congratulations! Tell us more about your daughter, please! She sounds like a terrific young lady.

What school is she attending?

My son hasn't yet declared his major, but it looks like he too will be a double major. We just aren't sure in what, yet since UVA doesn't require majors to be declared until the end of the second year. The four in contention are math, linguistics, cognitive science and computer science. As of this semester (his 3rd), he's a TA in computer science, so that's the front runner.

I did my best to talk him into engineering. Outside of medicine (which is very difficult for a white male to get into these days) I think engineering is the best career he could choose, but I wasn't successful. It's his life, after all, and I'm not going to force him into something he's not interested in.

I'm happy you were successful.
