The problem with government is that it is motivated by popularity, not efficiency. This means that it puts style over substance. It cares more about what the news reports tell people than what its customers experience.

Politicians are elected based on how popular they are, and that may not be grounded in reality. It all trickles down from there. Agencies and, ultimately, employees are more concerned in promoting the public's PERCEPTION of government than in actually doing a good job, because that makes the politicians above them look good. Sometimes, promoting the public's perception involves wasting vast sums of money, which is well and good so long as the press doesn't learn about what's happened and report on it. Other times, of course, the lack of accountability encourages sloppiness.

These days, with the Press firmly in the grip of big government proponents, we are in a world of danger. Truly awful government policies can and are being established, and the Press isn't warning people. People only find out about what's happening when screwed up government policies impact them directly, by which time it's too late for them to lament the absence of efficiency.

The United States, the country we knew and loved, is gone. It will NOT return. Brace yourself for what's to come.
