You like fission? Why, in God's name would you like fission?

The sailors on the Ronald Reagan, which was 50 miles from Fukushima are dying. The fish are radioactive in the Pacific and some aren't reproducing at all. Looks like Europe's having a secret Chernobyl. No place to put the waste. Output is nuclear bombs. Who needs it?

Nuclear accident alert after high levels of radiation over Europe — “Major release” of radioactive material reported; Over 100 Trillion becquerels — Official: “An unusual isotope… I don’t think we have seen it since Chernobyl” (VIDEO)

Starlight> How about dumping subsidies on the nuclear industry and refocus R&D on something that won't end up destroying us, like fusion or rolling out solar?

Solar is not a particularly good idea - at least not for providing
'baseload' electricity. (One problem - when clouds or rain happens over the
solar panels the available watts drops - the watts have to be made
up somehow . . perhaps a big-old gas turbine generator? so, which
is cheaper - solar panels and the gas turbine, or just the gas
turbine?)

Solar on rooftops to take some of the sting out of peak electrical
demand is a pretty good idea.

I like nuclear (fission). Fusion is still 'pie in the sky' - for all the
promises I don't think they are close to making it work. (Not to
mention whatever the side effects of it are going to be.)

But, for the threads original subject - I still feel we need
to radically reduce the amount of welfare and eliminate most
of the 'social welfare spending - like Housing and urban development,
local transportation spending (light rail anybody?), local police efforts . . . .
None of those things are the federal governments business.

Zim.
