This is one of the best examples I've ever seen of something that was described in George Orwell's classic, 1984.
In 1984, there are only three nations, and they are in a perpetual state of war. Oceana and one of the other two have allied against the third. One day, the protagonist wakes up and reads that Oceana and the third nation are at war with the second ANDALWAYSHAVEBEEN. By lunchtime, nobody knows or cares that their reality has just changed.
