Everyone is wondering why Trump won't just fire Comey. He wants to, trust me, and should. Comey has 6 years left on a 10 year gig as FBI director. That shit is not going to work for what Trump has planned obviously.
Comey knows he's going to get axed he's no dummy.
So he did something very shrewd. He announced there's an investigation into Trump and Russia but won't provide any details (because he doesn't have any) only that there is FOR SURE an investigation. He stated this over and over.
Why? To keep his job by force. With leverage.
Do you know the last time a president fired an investigator investigating him? It was Richard Nixon. It was the nail in his coffin that made such an uproar it lead to his impeachment ultimately.
The “Saturday Night Massacre” was when President Nixon fired independent special prosecutor Archibald Cox, and as a result accepted the resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus on October 20, 1973, during the Watergate scandal.
The public was shocked and came to the angry and boisterous conclusion Nixon must be guilty if he fired the ones investigating him and it was over before it even began at that point. All the rest of Watergate was just a formality. Nixon was done.
This is what Comey is doing. He started an 'investigation" because firing him during it will likely result in Trump's impeachment and comparisons to the Saturday night massacre and it's result will be on every media source in the world in an instance.

So can Trump fire Comey? Yes.
Not without some thing 100% concrete and damning though.
If solid evidence surfaces to show Comey has colluded to keep Obama administration surveillance of Trump secret, Comey could be gone soon. Also, if Comey is shown to have lied to Congress or failed to fully cooperate with Congressional inquiries, that could also signal his early demise as FBI Director.
This is the game being played that a lot of you sense but can't quite put your fingeron with Comey.
Also Gowdy is rumored to be who Trump wants to put in his spot, as soon as he can find a way to fire him.
Until the russian bullshit is over or they can tie him to a wrong doing big enough to unseat him though he's staying.
