I've read a bit more on Faraday cages this morning and have concluded that chicken wire would be useless. If I decide to protect myself from an EMP, I'll buy a shipping cargo container set up on wooden timbers, bury an old motor block deep in the ground, then use heavy metal cable to connect the block to the shipping cargo container. Internally, the walls will be lined so that none of the contents come in contact with the metal.

THAT ought to do the trick. I'll store backups of data and spare electronics (chain saws, generators, etc.) in the container and use battery powered lights inside. (No external wiring should enter a Faraday cage.)

It sounds like an EMP is not survivable by those who have pacemakers - unless they're inside a Faraday cage when the pulse occurs.
