Kelly has this list of 'Best used cars for under $8 thousand.' http://www.kbb.com/car-reviews-and-news/top-10/best-used-cars-under-8000/2100000852-10/ Since the list assumes DEALER pricing, I bet I could find comparable vehicles for sale by owner for $5 or $6 thousand.

At least it gives me a place to start.

2010 Kia Soul (bigger than he wants. No 4WD.)
2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata (too sporty for my son)
2007 Subaru Impreza (catalytic converter tends to fail around 120k miles. Yes 4WD.)
2007 Nissan Maxima (tranny prone to failure after 100k.)
2006 Subaru Outback (catalytic converter tends to fail around 120k miles. Yes 4WD.)
2008 Ford Crown Victoria (Nope. It's Ford and too fancy.)
2008 Toyota Corolla (catalytic failure expected at 125k. Make sure the recalled computer was replaced.)
2010 Honda Civic (Nothing negative)
2007 Honda Accord (Catalytic may need replacement at 100k to 120k. It's not cheap. But the car will last for 200k miles if well cared for.)
2006 Toyota Avalon. (A big car. 200k miles likely if well cared for.)

Opinions are welcome.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

re: "DONT buy a ford Taurus."

Thanks. It's a given that I won't buy him an American car.

Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Mazda, Honda, Mitsubishi. There are a lot of car companies. But if you were sending your child off to school for four years or more and wanted to buy him something for less than $5,000 in a private transaction, what cars would top your list if DEPENDABILITY was the #1 concern?
