Room & board is, indeed, a racket. I just checked and the room (a little bigger than your typical kid's bedroom ... and shared with a roommate) runs $8,000 per year at both Virginia Commonwealth and Cornell. It's another $5,500 per year for "dining" at Cornell. I think these charges are standard.

Moreover, living on campus is mandatory for Freshmen at the top colleges (M.I.T., Harvard, Princeton, etc.). What a scam. They at least cut the students a break after the first year and let them find their own place. At Harvard, I've heard that most do NOT - but then Harvard is unusual in that an extraordinary amount of campus life takes place in the Houses - which are run by eminent members of the faculty who are live-in advisors to the students. Given how prominent these people are, that's a very valuable thing. (Our student guide said his House was run by one of the Deans.)

Still, it aint' cheap.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
