Ron Paul's district is Freeport, Tx - and isn't sitting 'on the border'. He might have a different view if he had lived in Laredo- which is right on the border. The distance from Freeport to Laredo (about the closest point of the border to Freeport) is 307 miles. The same distance that Boston is from Montreal.

Yes, those other factors listed are important. However, a wall WILL be effective, very effective, in many places. It won't stop it all- but it will stop a hell of a lot. Just ask Israel ... and China. *s*

re: "remove the welfare magnet that attracts so many to cross the border illegally, stop the 25 year US war in the Middle East, and end the drug war that incentivizes smugglers to cross the border."

Ron Paul is right, but it's unusual for him to leave obvious holes in his statement.

We also need to eliminate the paths to citizenship for those who come here illegally - and for their offspring. Being born on our soil is not an intelligent basis for citizenship.

And we need to take away the jobs. That can be done by punishing employers who do not verify the citizenship of their employees.
