re: "hoses, batteries, etc."

I do the basics - spark plugs, batteries, tire rotation, wipers, filters, fluids, etc. Even that starts becoming tricky, though. With my truck, rotating the tires requires a computer reset afterward, and I can't do that. Same with changing the oil.

When I was young, I replaced alternators, water pumps and even a carbueretor. But those vehicles were simpler, and I had the motivation (which means I had no money.) I'm not interested in doing that anymore.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

I'm not retired yet either and I change lots of parts on cars, still. Belts, power steering pumps, EGR valves,

hoses, batteries, etc. That said, do I like it? Nope. Rather be on the golf course.

But I hear ya. It ain't for amateurs or beginners but a lot of things you actually can do for yourself and save some momney, like changing the CABIN AIR FILTER in a vehicle, which is usuall behind the glove box. It's just a smaller version of the air filter only it is located there ...... It's a $45.00 plus replacement at a shop. A 15 dollar replacement that takes ten minutes at home in your driveway....
