You've got that right. I've got all the respect in the world for a good mechanic. Car repair and plumbing are two jobs I really detest. Plumbing is usually an emergency so I'll tackle it anyway. Cars can usually wait and go into the shop.

Part of my aversion boils down to common sense. Car work is SO much easier for those who have the right tools to do diagnostics, hydraulic lifting, part removal, etc., and experience. If work needs doing on an infrequent and small scale, it isn't usually practical to do yourself. Especially since I'm not yet retired and have no special interest in engine repair.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

Professor,

excellent information regarding the transferring of metals from one type to another. NOT many people know that happens. I happen to be one that does. Excellent observation!!

You make a valid point about replacing an engine with a long block also. I did that in a vehicle about ten years ago for right at $2300.00 including shipping.

De does not sound like he is much interested in being a do it yourselfer on car repair as he is pressed for time and to be honest, likely does not feel comfortable being a car mechanic.

Between yourself and Cap'n there is liots of good info there. And YES SIR, a head gasket will definitely allow the coolant to actually leak into the oil pan.

Thanks,

micro...
