re: "Imagine if you were allowed to keep what you earned. Not 60 percent of it."

Sixty percent? Who gets to keep sixty percent?

I once created a list all the taxes, fees, etc, I pay, and the amount I was able to keep was way under 50 percent.

I mean... 25% income tax, 10% state income tax, 7% sales tax. There, I'm at 42 percent already. Then there's property tax, tolls, city parking fees, traffic violations, social security, healthcare deductions, liquor tax, "prepared food" tax, vehicle registration fees, safety checks, smog checks, national park entry fees, dog licenses, bicycle licenses, mandatory trash pickup costs (in places like Sacramento where you can't opt out.), the Death tax and the gas tax.

It goes on and on and I'm sure I've forgotten some big ones.

Imagine if you were allowed to keep what you earned. Not 60 percent of it. All of it. To spend as you see fit, on only the things you need and want. Probably, there would be roads. Very good ones.
