Sounds like it is starved for fuel, Zim. A clogged fuel line - some have a short rubber hose that runs from gas tank to carb, carb fuel bowl clogged with junk, or the 'float valve' is stuck closed not allowing any gas in.
Try taking the air filter off, and pour about a teaspoon of good gas directly into carb. Then start - if it runs for more than a second (maybe up to about 3-4 seconds, you know fuel is restricted someplace You can also use starting ether for this, if you have any.
Check that your choke is working - but since it quit while rnnning, don't really think this is your problem.
Disassembly of tank and carb system for thorough cleaning (diesel is a great cleaner) may be required. This USED to be an easy job before fed regs made the damn things almost impregnable.
You don't say what kind of mower this is - but IF there is a fuel filter, replace it.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good ...
