Sounds like it is starved for fuel, Zim. A clogged fuel line - some have a short rubber hose that runs from gas tank to carb, carb fuel bowl clogged with junk, or the 'float valve' is stuck closed not allowing any gas in.

Try taking the air filter off, and pour about a teaspoon of good gas directly into carb. Then start - if it runs for more than a second (maybe up to about 3-4 seconds, you know fuel is restricted someplace You can also use starting ether for this, if you have any.

Check that your choke is working - but since it quit while rnnning, don't really think this is your problem.

Disassembly of tank and carb system for thorough cleaning (diesel is a great cleaner) may be required. This USED to be an easy job before fed regs made the damn things almost impregnable.

You don't say what kind of mower this is - but IF there is a fuel filter, replace it.

Seems I was using my lawnmower to slice and dice the
leaves, and stuff them into the catcher bag.

Worked very well. Till my lawnmower quit.

It's like it starts up when I pull the rope . . .
runs for about a second then dies again.

I tried replacing the air filter and the spark plug
and I added some stuff to the gas that is supposed
to help clean the carburetor, remove any water, etc. etc.

No help.

I also found it was low on oil, so I added enough to get it up on the stick. Still won't keep running.

Any suggestions?
(Other than time to buy a new mower - come spring when the grass starts growing again.)

Zim.
