First, welcome to the board! It's always nice to see new blood.
Second, your kids have already been screwed out of S.S. Depending on your age, it might not be there for you either. The present value of Social Security obligations is about $80 trillion. Compare that to the current federal debt of about $20 trillion (which is widely regarded as a huge concern) and the magnitude of the Social Security problem should become clear to you. The money ISN'T there, and now that the Baby Boomers are retiring, the intake is already insufficient to keep up with the outtake. You'd best break the news to your kids so they can get ready to NOT have Social Security helping when they're older.
Medicare either. It's in even worse shape than Social Security.
The truth is, our federal government has promised to make payments that amount to over two million dollars per U.S. household, and it doesn't have ANY of that money stashed away in its savings account. So, where do you suppose it is going to get the money??
