I noted in that article a paragraph (the pig won't let
me copy and paste it . . .) saying something about
the O.S. putting 'Edge' into a 'lightweight virtual
machine' to make it more difficult for the bad guys
to break out and attack the O.S.

Why wasn't that sort of thing built into the very first
browsers?

Instead of keeping the rest of the universe at arms
length from the O.S. . . . microsnot, in their infinite
wisdom, packaged it into a warm fuzzy embrace with the O.S.
