There's this perception that caring and honorable people must be at the helm of what we believe to be caring and honorable institutions. The perception is wrong. Consider the Green Party, Goodwill, The U.S. Government, The Catholic Church (but, really, ANY church), The New York Times, the Red Cross, etc., each of which would once have garnered you a round of applause at the mere mention of your affiliation but have since been plagued by scandal after scandal.
Often, the historically positive impressions we have of certain organizations make them plum targets for the world most powerful, unscrupulous people. The positive impressions linger long after the reality changes, and folks capitalize on that. Sad but true.
