nacl's advice is good. If, when you plug the computer into the modem, it begins to smoke or burn, then one of the two components is likely misconfigured and requires service.

If he has questions about the modem, it i might make sense to plug the computer directly into the modem, kind of like when you plug it into the wall to check out the surge protector. You wouldn't to run it like that, but it could be a useful test.
