Anyway, Trump won the popular vote on all the States he won. The USA being a federal republic, the electoral college system is a mechanism to prevent one particular state from imposing a president on all the other states.
Imagine a scenario where candidate A would win 49 states by a relatively small margin in each state. Imagine the remaining state to be a very populous one, where candidate B would win by a enormous margin. If the lead of candidate B in that one state were to outnumber the sum of the small differences on all the other 49 states, if there was no electoral college and the sum total of votes would directly elect the federal president, that one state alone would be able to impose candidate B as president to all the other states, with the undesirable consequences that you can imagine.
