The end is coming quickly for me. Big changes are afoot.
In June, my lease is up. We'll be hauling most of our possessions... the ones we are keeping, anyway... to New Hampshire, and moving the rest into a Virginia apartment or townhouse. That will save us a little money. And we won't need the space because...
In August, my son heads off to college. We don't know which one, but he's interviewing with Harvard this Saturday. He's applying to sixteen schools, ranging from very high quality institutions (okay, I recognize they aren't quality in your opinions) to a couple that he considers sure things (Virginia Commonwealth (VCU), Virginia Tech). That's how it works these days. You apply to numerous places, both to schools you hope will admit you, but also to some you're certain will. VCU, as I recall, had no charge for applying. That's why he applied to it. He laughed, though, as he pointed out the grammatical errors present in the essay instructions on VCU's website.
He's pretty sure William & Mary will accept him, by the way. He says their acceptance rate is high and his GPA is miles past W&M's average.
The next question is . . . how to apply for scholarships. The kid is wonderful and accomplished and amazing, but that's not good enough. He's the wrong gender and race. Scholarship and admissions people probably won't like him.
But, I digress.
In August, he moves away. Then it's just my wife and me for the first time in 18 years. In early or mid 2018, we'll be retiring and moving to New Hampshire.
And then things get REALLY interesting...
