Yeah.
That does happen. After the sub-prime meltdown
GE and Pfizer both cut their dividends. (And if the
American economy is really more like a dead animal
it is likely we will see more dividend cuts. No
profits, no dividends.)

I once had a power company which first cut, then ended
their dividend.

On the other hand, I've owned Dominion Resources (D -
my local power company)since 1997 and I've enjoyed an
un-interrupted string of dividends - and more dividend
increases than not.

Not to mention that in 2000 while all those dot.com
companies were diving into the bottom of the toilet
Dominion (and many other power companies) were
climbing nicely.

Look up 'Dividend Aristocrats'. Many of my holdings
are members of that club.
