I am looking at an article from Forbes in which the
guy claims that a small fraction of the Sahara Desert,
'properly paved' with solar panels could power the
entire planet.

I think he's full of it.

. . .
Answer: The current panel costs run about fifty-five cents per Watt. There are additional costs for panel installation and inverters. The inverters are devices that convert the Direct Current (DC) output of panels to Alternating Current (AC) needed for long distance transmission. The total costs currently run about ninety cents to a dollar per Watt installed. In this proposal we have assumed the realistic thirty cents per Watt.

Out of one side of the clowns mouth, he admits that
solar currently runs around ninety cents a watt, installed.
Yet, somehow, he thinks he can get a 'realistic' installation
cost of thirty cents a watt . . .

I don't think so.
Finally, while one MIGHT be able to make enough
electricity to power the world in the Sahara . . .
One can not cost effectively move the watts from the
Sahara to, say, New York City or Tokyo.
