Proposition 55 on the November ballot asks voters to extend the temporary income tax increase on the wealthiest Californians that were part of a tax package approved in 2012, when the state was struggling out from under the recession.
The taxes in the original measure will be phased out, as promised. Gov. Jerry Brown and the Legislature are not making an end-run around voters. They’re asking them to extend the current income tax rates on incomes of more than $250,000 for individuals, or more than $340,000 for heads of household.
