We are a lot alike in that respect as well.
My career began with the answer to questions about what I thought I needed for a salary as being, "whatever you think is a fair starting salary." I never once in my life asked for a raise.

If my performance did not catch the attention of the person who recommend me for one, then I figured I did not try hard enough. Or it was always possible as well that the company may just have had a rough year.

Either way, if I did not like it, I could always leave....

Times and attitudes have certainly changed.

I never once asked what a job paid.
I always figured it would pay the
bills I needed to pay and if it did
not I would get a second job.
