Not so. They're legal. Maybe illegal in Florida, but not everywhere. They're legal in Virginia, f'rinstance. Godawful expensive and HEAVILY regulated, but not illegal.
This doesn't invalidate your point. There's no way that guy bought a legal automatic weapon. It takes at least a year, and with his record he would have brought the entire FBI down on him.
