If he has a gun also, then yes. If he's armed with a knife or a chain, then he'd better take me out with his very first strike.
Let me put it this way: If you get attacked, your only chance may be if you have a sidearm. Bad guys tend to assume that you don't. That mistake may actually give you the advantage.

...in my humble but likely misguided opinion I believe that the aggressor has the advantage whether you are armed or not. The thing about a gun is that while you may be just as much a victim as the next guy, you will not have to stand idly by while a large thug has his way with someone else.
