That would be wildly out of character for Cruz. Also, with all the names and charges Trump has thrown at Cruz, the pair would be cannon-fodder for the Democratic attack ads.
Particularly damaging is the issue Trump raised of Cruz's eligibility . . . an allegation about which Trump is correct, imo. Remember, he didn't say Cruz isn't eligible. He said that Democrats would file a suit which would severely hinder Cruz's run for the White House. Trump is absolutely right. The Democrats WOULD file that stupid suit, and it would drag Cruz down into the weeds until after the election. His value as a running-mate would be less than zero.
So, no VP slot for Cruz. No Presidential slot for him either. Maybe in 2020 - by which time there will hopefully have been a Supreme court ruling that resolves this issue - but not now. (IMO, a citizen who didn't gain his citizenship by going through the naturalization process is a Natural-born citizen. I think that's obviously what the founders would have wanted since their goal was to ensure that no foreign power would ever have undue influence over a U.S. President.)
