...ENRON was an alleged profitable company that didn't pay any taxes for about six years. Turns out that the books they were showing the IRS and the books they were showing the shareholders were not the same set of books. If ya got a bunch of companies not paying taxes my bet is that at least some of them if not most are not making a profit.
