Why? In the United States, the Great Depression was nothing. Certainly nothing compared to what's to come. The unemployment rate during the great depression ranged from 15% to 25%. We're as bad as that today.
The worst thing about the Great Depression was how long it lasted. It really was just a serious recession that FDR managed to prolong for a decade. It wouldn't have been anything like that if market forces have been in play and the business cycle had been allowed to complete.
