ribit,

re:"If ya ain't up to no good it shouldn't bother ya."

You're as wrong as wrong can be.

The reason is because you have a persistent view of government as being made up of good guys, with all of the bad guys being out here among the citizenry. This is probably due to some sort of mental crap they fed you when you were a cop. It messed with your ability to think things through objectively and you haven't yet shaken off the damage they did.

There are, in fact, times when the bad guys work for the government and the good guys are part of the populace. There are in fact times when good people have secrets and need to keep them. If you don't think that's the case, just think about the French underground while Hitler was in charge. They weren't 'up to no good,' and they had plenty of reason to be concerned if their secrets had been readily transparent to government.

I don't particularly want government to know much of anything about me. I don't want them to know who my friends are. I don't want them to know how much cash I have in the house. I don't want them to know about any of the prepping that I might have done. I certainly don't want them to know about any guns or ammunition I might have.

I don't particularly want to further empower the government in any way. It has too much power as it is. The sad thing is, government will undoubtedly find a way to extract the information off of people cell phones whether Apple complies with the court order or not. It's bound to happen. And that just tells me that smart phones are very, very dangerous and really shouldn't be used by anyone. That's a shame, because I doubt that they have to be dangerous and they're clearly very useful tools. But thanks to our government and its propensity to pry into our private affairs "for our own good," these tools probably shouldn't be in the hands of any thinking being. Not if they know what's good for them, that is.

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

...there is no reasonable right of privacy on the internet or on cellphones. I used to have a radio ya could listen in on cellphones with. Then they changed the way they do it. If a law requiring a court order for a tap on land lines is sufficient then I would assume that it is sufficient for cellphones as well. If ya ain't up to no good it shouldn't bother ya. Not compromising any of my rights here. Neither should anyone else unless you think you have a right to committ crimes or terrorism and get away with it.
