Would someone care to explain what's up with Turner Classic Movies (and some other stations)?
My television is 41"x23". I measured. That's 943 square inches. The movie, however, is showing up as 30" x 12.5". That's 375 square inches. In short, I'm losing almost 61% of my viewable area!
Someone's probably going to say that 'Letterboxing' accounts for it... but that's not true, because then at least one of the two dimensions would reach the sides of my TV. Someone else might think it's because the film quality doesn't support such a large television screen without an unacceptable loss of quality. But that doesn't sound right either since these movies were meant to be projected onto HUGE screens.
So what's up? Is this just a case of the folks at TCM being jerks?
