Edward Snowden nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

By Karen Friar

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Edward Snowden, who has leaked a stream of confidential National Security Agency documents, has been nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize by two Norwegian lawmakers, media reports said Wednesday. "There is no doubt that the actions of Edward Snowden may have damaged the security interests of several nations in the short term," Baard Vegard Solhjell and Snorre Valen reportedly said in a statement. "We are, however, convinced that the public debate and change in policy that have followed in the wake of Snowden's whistleblowing have contributed to a more stable and peaceful world order." Earlier in January, in the wake of Snowden's revelations, President Barack Obama revealed his administration plans to reform the NSA's mass collection of phone data. More than 250 nominations for the Peace Prize were put forward last year, and the Nobel Committee is expected to reveal this year's winner on Oct. 10.
