This is the fatal flaw in democracies, and in countries such as ours that have such ambitions. The majority benefit by using their votes to violate the rights of a minority, then assuage their consciences by telling themselves that it is the government that did the dirty deed, not they themselves. Thus, the unthinking are rewarded for their unethical actions, numbed to them, and encouraged to do more, bolder, harm.
Today's majority has gone a step further, persuading itself that its targets - conservatives, the wealthy, the ethical, and the nation's golden goose, BUSINESS, is evil and deserves to be victimized. A democracy CANNOT recover once it gets to this point. It is openly assaulting the things it once admired, the virtues and people that made the country great.
In nearly every way, the U.S. is on an unalterable downward tack. We've seen the blinding speed with which tremendous changes can be imposed. I therefore wonder how much time we have until the country realizes that it has kicked its own legs out from under itself and has the good sense to fall down. Not long at all, I should think.
