Congresswoman Susan Davis Votes to Provide Retro Pay to Federal Workers
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) cast a vote in favor of bipartisan legislation authorizing back pay to federal workers for the full duration of the federal government shutdown. The Federal Employee Retroactive Pay Fairness Act (H.R. 3223), which was approved by the House of Representatives 407-0 during a rare Saturday session, will ensure that federal employees impacted by the government shutdown receive retroactive pay regardless of their furlough status.
"Passing this bill was a step in the right direction but it is no substitute for ending this manufactured crisis immediately,” said Davis, a cosponsor of H.R. 3223. “If the Speaker would simply allow the House to vote on the Senate-passed clean funding bill, this crisis could be over today."
Approximately 33,000 workers in San Diego County have been furloughed. Many more workers deemed “essential” continue to stay on the job without pay.
"I am hearing from many federal workers throughout the region who are anxious about being able to pay their bills," Davis said. "They have every right to be furious about this politically-driven shutdown. I know I am furious. These are dedicated people who proudly serve the American people. They keep us safe, make sure our seniors get their Social Security checks, and take care of our veterans. They should not suffer because a minority of the majority in Congress insist on shutting the government down over an ideological crusade."
The government shutdown could cost the San Diego region $7 million a week according to recent estimates.
