We don't realize how much of our perception is expectation. In general, we see and hear what we expect.
Here's an exercise. Try reading with the page upside down. It's quite easy once your brain retrains to expect inverted text.
We're taught to read one word (indeed one sound) at a time, but our brains are quite capable of grabbing a paragraph or even an entire page of text and processing (reading) it at a glance. Takes training and practice that really should be part of the educational curriculum.
