Romney needed something - because he was going to lose on HIS ticket - too many conservatives felt like (and still feel like) they've been pissed on by the Republican Party choosing Romney as their de-facto nominee. Most were going to sit it out - just like MOST would have sat it out with McCain until Sarah Palin was added to the thicket (sic).
