Ron Paul: Iran justified in closing Strait of Hormuz

Ron Paul's loony and dangerous foreign policy stance just got loonier and more dangerous:

... At a campaign event in Iowa Thursday, Paul called Western sanctions imposed against Iran over its nuclear activities "horrendous" and "acts of war," while repeating earlier assertions that Iran would understandably want to develop a nuclear weapons capability, the Los Angeles Times reported.

On Iran's threat to close Hormuz, the Texan congressman said that as president he would not respond with military action to any such move, as he would not consider it an act of war against the United States. Instead, he would refer the matter to the U.S. Congress.

Not only did Paul say that he would not respond militarily to Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz, he even went so far as to add that Iran would be justified in cutting off the strategic waterway in response to sanctions.

Hmmm....this is interesting and makes Ron Paul's position seem much more rational.

On average, 14 crude oil tankers per day passed through the Strait in 2011, with a corresponding amount of empty tankers entering to pick up new cargos. More than 85 percent of these crude oil exports went to Asian markets, with Japan, India, South Korea, and China representing the largest destinations.

So we would go to war to open the Strait of Hormuz for whom exactly? The Japanese? Chinese? Or maybe (ahem) Big Oil?

Paul is taking neocon flak this week for saying he wouldn't order the military to open the Strait if Iran closed it because he wouldn't see it as an act of war against the US, and that he would refer the matter of declaring war to Congress for debate as specified in our Constitution.

Contrary to the actions of presidents since WWII this is actually the most rational and proper course for a president.
