As with just about everything, it's a question of energy consumption and environmental impact. A good discussion here:

I like the idea of co-locating power and desalinization plants, especially if some form of tidal/wave generation is used instead of burning dinosaurs or splitting atoms.

Thanks, great info. Israel makes up the difference with desalinization, but one rocket and that's out. That aquifer's important.

Speaking in general, there had been talk of recharging the aquifers using desalinization. Maybe that's something Israel should consider. I don't know the latest thinking on it, but it's interesting given the Ogallala's a bit ragged around its receding edges....
