What I can't seem to get out of my mind is that 25% premium on gas that resulted from speculation, supposedly (who knows if that was true...).

Not very much reality at all. Faceless 'speculators' are easy to blame, but the real problem is the fiat currency and the Fed's 'easing' policies that provide the fuel for the speculation. Indeed, the low interest rates set by the Fed force investment in the 'market' because there are negative returns in traditional savings.

At the heart of the problem is government intervention in the market.
