Thanks Kathy! Yeh, I know many of those places and some I assiduously avoid. Haven't been on the Turnpike for more than a few years. We don't go 'down the shore' or to AC at all anymore. My wife grew up in Oakland, CA and although she lived in Colts Neck, went to Brookdale College and worked in Long Branch, she's still thinks of the shore as 'the beach'.
I lament the destruction of the old places--the hotels and piers in AC, the Asbury Park carousel and Palace amusements, the Long Branch fishing pier, Lido Diner, etc. I remember when the Stone Pony was Mrs. J's restaurant and the Flagship was a caberet.
Nicole Atkins is my fave 'Jersey girl' artist--just saw her perform in July. Here are a few of her old tunes with local shore color.
