micro, there are spikes, and then there are 'spikes'.

A true 'spike' - ie. instantaneous in time, with ZERO time duration, obviously, does not exist. ALL 'SPIKES' are different; amplitude, time duration, frequency content. (yes, and voltage, amperage, etc.)


The joule ratings on surge protectors are pretty worthless.

If it's worth protecting, but a UPS on it.

Yes sir,

there is something to be said for using an Uninterruptible Power Supply, UPS, especially for sensitive electronic devices such as computers.

May I ask a quick question please?

Have you ever purchased a very high quality surge protector that protects over 100,000 joules rating?

The inexpensive ones are not worth a dime but the higher resistance ones actually do work.

You can get them from the mid twenties to over thirty dollars depending on the store.
Current fluctuations are normal and normally some low current occasionally isn't so bad but the SPIKES are what ZAP appliances like refrigerators and televisions. Hence, the need for a very HIGH RATED SURGE PROTECTOR as opposed to an UPS.

The battery backup is good for shutting off the computer if the power fails and mine came with a program that will automatically and safely shut off my computer after so many minutes of running on battery power. Unfortunately, the BATTERY on these things do get worn out and need replacing.

I would suggest a GOOD surge protector, (check the joule ratings, the higher the better) as it has no batteries to replace and protects against electrical surges and spikes.
