We have about 30 varieties of day lilies--a tiny sampling of the more than 4000 cultivars available. They're easy to grow/propagate and are essentially indestructable--no serious insect pests or diseases.
Another of my favourites is Hearts Ease Delight that we got from Hildegarde Howell, who is a delight in her own right. We get a few new cultivars every year from Hildegarde, who's been hybridizing day lilies and orchids for 50 years or so. Here's an article about her: http://www.dig-itmag.com/features/flowers_story/452_0_3_0_M/ Here's the Hearts Ease website: http://www.heartseasegreenhouse.com/Daylilies.html
H.E.Delight is absolutely prolific. We started with a single fan that produced one scape the first year. Today there are more than 35 scapes in the original planting (after dividing it several times to plant elsewhere)--more than 400 blooms over the season.
By the way, they're very tasty! You can eat the young leaves, tubers, buds and flowers of day lilies. Plenty of recipes on the web.
