Can't really compare the two wars and don't confuse those who fight the wars with those who orchestrate 'em. Veterans of WWI ran WWII and the 'Greatest Generation' fought with a very clear purpose.
Veterans of WWII/Korea ran the Vietnam debacle and the boomers risked/lost their lives for fuzzier goals. The lack of clear purpose was a major factor in the loss.
Today, the boomers are running the oil and opium wars in the Mideast and Afghanistan and another generation is lost to the madness.
