micro, couldn't be said better than that. How about a saw and hatchet? If a house collapsed around you, it could be a long time before help arrives and you might have to get yourself out.

Linda,
the answer is simply "no".

People are killed in cars all the time. When you get sucked up by a vortex with winds in excess of 130 MPH and hurled to where or into whatever and land on the top, side, whatever, cars do crumble and crush.

Tornadoes pick up cars like matchsticks and throw them just as easily. You don't want to be an occupant.

I survived the devastation of Xenia tornadoes in 1974. Never will forget them. Cars were stacked like dominoes on top of each other, upside down, on end, some on houses or through houses. Of course, the houses and everything in their path was leveled.

This is why you want to be in a LOW and well entrenched spot if you can. They will lift the house, implode it mostly, but they do tear roofs right off easily and level interior walls.

IN my current home, we do not have a basement. We do have a very deep crawl space and what I have done there is to put some accommodations by the main plumbing down there like blankets, first aid, water, flashlights and batteries just in case.

Safest place in the house for us.

Tornadoes are nothing to gamble with. If you see the devastation up close and personal, you will remember this lesson your entire life.

Be safe, not a statistic.

the best,

micro...
