Due, thank you much for those insights and the link. That guy in town's a ripoff artist....

I have a very modest collection and don't intend to sell it now, as I think it will keep appreciating with world conditions, but I want to get a better feel for it . . .

You'll have to shop around locally for a good dealer. Here's a good application for determining value: http://www.silverrecyclers.com/Calculators/coin_calculator.aspx

For example, 400 silver quarters have a face value of $100. They contain just over 73 troy ounces of pure silver and at the current spot are worth about $3500. Seven times face value is only $700. Currently, Kitco is paying $30.60/1 for junk silver (90% silver US coins), but there are better deals. Call dealers and tell 'em what you have and ask what they'll pay.
