The legislation that Due referred to under algaeore and wee willy wanker did NOT pass - and there was no mandatory phaseout of MTBE.
Wikipedia actually has a half-way decent article (with a tad bit of enviro-whacko politicizing) on the issue - and confirms my statements about the cessation of use of MTBE.
I was NOT aware that several states had actually passed legislation banning MTBE - learned sometin' new there - but there is still no FEDERAL ban on MTBE - unless the EPA has done it thru backdoor 'legislation' known as 'regulation'.
The Wiki article does however strike out on the sunlight breakdown of MTBE (no mention) - and uses the 'scare numbers' for cleanup that are used as propaganda. The Wiki article makes it pretty damn clear that elimination of MTBE from drinking water can be done EXTREMELY cheaply - certainly much less than the 'estimates' that are quoted. But again - monkey looks for solutions - not politicization.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good ...
