Speculation that Kamala Harris could become Joe Biden's running mate went into overdrive after she dropped into a virtual fundraiser for the new presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee.
Biden thanked the California senator for her endorsement, telling donors during the digital event Wednesday that her support means "a lot."
"I'm so lucky to have you as part of this, this partnership going forward," the two-term former vice president said. "We can make a great deal of difference, and the biggest thing we can do is make Donald Trump a one-term president."
Biden added, "So, I'm coming for you, kid."
Harris, who has appeared in several national TV interviews in recent weeks, threw her political weight behind the 36-year senator from Delaware last month shortly after Elizabeth Warren dropped out of the race. She attributed her delay to not wanting to undermine a female White House candidate.
Harris suspended her own campaign last year before Iowa. Her early decision allowed her to remove her name from California's primary ballot, where she was on track for an embarrassing finish on Super Tuesday. Her bid started strongly last January but lost momentum over the summer and into the fall as she struggled to break through in the historically crowded field.
Despite having taken swings at Biden for his stance on issues such as federally mandated school busing in the 1960s and '70s, Harris on Wednesday praised him for his empathy.
"He sees people. He understands their pain, he understands their dreams," she said. "And what we need is a president who has a proven track record of leadership and also who has the ability to lift people up. That's what people need right now.”
Biden, who became the presumptive nominee after Bernie Sanders bowed out of contention, has promised to choose a woman as his No. 2 heading into the general election against Trump. He's named a handful of possibilities including Harris, whom he has also floated as a potential Supreme Court pick.
