Realist - Everybody in America is soft, and hates conflict. The cure for this, both in politics and social life, is the same -- hardihood. Give them raw truth.

Re: "The whole friggin country shut down over ONE state."
New Yorkers are, essentially, dirty people. They pack together in their filth and rats, and when a contagious disease comes along, huge number of them get it. New Yorkers were bound to be the first and worst U.S. victims of the coronavirus.

But I don't think New York is the reason for the rest of the country to shut down. The rest is shutting down because the disease is everywhere in the country. There are ten times as many undiagnosed carriers of the disease running around as identified patients and everyone should assume that the virus is nearby. Therefore, LOCK DOWN. It will die off or manifest itself in the undiagnosed carriers [hopefully] within three weeks. From a medical perspective, that makes some sense. Locking down slows the spread, buys some time and keep the healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed.

I have two concerns about doing this nationally, though. The first is the obviously devastating effect it has on our economy. The second is that if we lock down, we may never acquire herd immunity to the disease. It *may* be that the disease won't go away until most of the population becomes immune. If we lock down instead of building up immunity, we could almost get rid of it and then just have it return. It could even mutate into something deadlier. Right now, we really don't know what the virus will do. Wave 2 of the Spanish Influenza was FAR deadlier than wave 1. Will COVID-19 be like that???
