by By Matt Young, Houston Chronicle
Legendary Harlem Globetrotters entertainer Fred "Curly" Neal died Thursday morning at his home outside of Houston. He was 77 years old.
Neal had been battling the effects from a stroke in recent years, according to ESPN's Marc J. Spears.
“We have lost one of the most genuine human beings the world has ever known,” Globetrotters general manager Jeff Munn said in a statement on Twitter. “Curly’s basketball skill was unrivaled by most, and his warm heart and huge smile brought joy to families worldwide.”
Neal is one of just eight Globetrotters to have his number retired after playing with the team for 22 years. Neal was known for his ball-handling skills and was one of the most popular players during the team's heyday from 1963 to 1985, which included TV specials such as "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island."
Neal grew up in Greensboro, N.C., and played at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., where he averaged 23 points per game.
The other Globetrotters to have their jersey retired are: Wilt Chamberlain, Meadowlark Lemon, Marques Haynes, Goose Tatum, Geese Ausbie, Tex Harrison and "Sweet" Lou Dunbar.
