Re: "I personally believe it would be right for her to go back and face the music."
I've been thinking about it still more. I've now concluded that the 1997 'Republic of Georgia' case set a BAD precedent. Here's why:

Let's forget for a moment about how the most recent case involves "friendly" England. IMO, that's irrelevant.

Envision a scenario in which a U.S. diplomat ... to IRAN ... breaks one of their laws and flees back to the United States. Iran demands that the diplomat (or his wife, if that's the case) return to face trial. Should we extradite him?

Well, I know a few things for sure. The American isn't going to get a fair trial over there. He sure won't face a jury of his peers - and isn't that Constitutionally guaranteed (6th amendment)? In fact, he'll probably be doomed before the trial even starts for the offense of not being Muslim. Aren't most of the laws there religion-based? Aren't trials usually adjudicated by religious leaders?

Is it proper to send Americans overseas for trial where they won't have their Constitutionally-guaranteed rights? If so, what diplomat in his right mind would be willing to take the job?

I think President Trump made the right decision. And I think what was done to the Georgian diplomat in 1997 was wrong. He may well have pled guilty (which he did) simply to avoid facing a jury of Americans who, in all likelihood, would be biased against a foreigner who talks and looks like a Russian. Now, I'm no lawyer, but what happened to him doesn't sound like justice. Nor does sending Anne Sacoolas back to England.

Everything I've read about it indicates this was simply a tragic accident - like you said, not a case of willful negligence or drunk driving. I know "diplomatic immunity" is used around the globe to avoid criminal and civil prosecutions, which can certainly cause injustices to occur. I do not know if the husband's diplomatic immunity extends to his wife, but of course, that issue was quickly circumvented by getting her back to the U.S. - "possession is nine-tenths of the law," so to speak. BUT, I can certainly understand why Great Britain, a staunch ally of the U.S., would really like to see her come back to face any charges. I personally believe it would be right for her to go back and face the music.

HOWEVER, I agree ... this is no reason to not vote for Trump in 2020.
