Burning cash would be pretty stupid. Boil the cash or wash it in alcohol. Either will do the job.

There's a book, The White Plague written by... Frank Herbert, I believe... in which a virus kills all the women. The world learns too late that it was spreading via cash. This book is probably where your story originated.
